Individual Scholarly Paper of the Coat of Arms The purpose of this paper is to discuss the qualities chosen in our groups Coat of Arms assignment and why these qualities represent Nursing. Knowledge, communication, critical thinking, caring, advocacy, and leadership are the qualities being chosen in the Coat of Arms assignment. The components and symbols of the Coat of Arms will also be explained at the final part of this paper First of all, knowledge is the essential building block of the art of nursing. Knowledge helps a nurse think critically and make decisions during their practice. There are two types of knowledge: empirical and particular knowledge. A nurse acquires empirical knowledge at school which includes knowledge of anatomy, physiology, path physiology, and epidemiology. Empirical knowledge can be applied directly to patients. Particular knowledge is unique to each patient situation. For example, if a patient has kidney failure, according to empirical knowledge a nurse would suggest the patient have a kidney transplant. On the other side, the nurse understands the patients religion makes the patient reluctant to have any organs transplantation, therefore the nurse would establish different nursing interventions for the patient. Through lifelong learning, a nurse will be able to acquire more nursing knowledge and this will help them excel in their practice (Cooper,2001). Communication is another important quality of nursing. It is important that a nurse use communication skills to establish a therapeutic relationship with his or her patients. Through actively listening and inquiry a nurse can find out clients needs and identify goals. The nurse then must communicate that information back to her patient and begin establishing realistic expectations of recovery. Nurses also work with many other coworkers so effective communication is key to maintaining an effective health care team (Potter Perry, 2009). Critical thinking emphasizes the use of logic and reasoning to make decisions. This is an important quality in nursing because during the care of patients, nurses are constantly making decisions that affect patient well being.(Fornerisà 1à à McAlpine, 2009) For instance, Mrs. Smith, a 50 year old woman comes to see a nurse with a swollen right knee. The nurse has to thinking critically to find the cause of Mrs. Smiths injured knee. The nurse will ask questions related to Mrs. Smiths previous health problems to determine what led to the injured knee, and for her to rank the pain from 0 to 10. After Mrs. Smith responds, the nurse has to analyze the data and might explain to Mrs. Smith that she may apply some ointment to help with the pain along with doing endurance exercises. Two weeks later, Mrs. Smith is asked to come back to see if the exercise and ointment helped. Critical thinking helps nurses identify patients unique problems and assist nurses with planning for a special nu rsing intervention for the patient and evaluate if the treatment given to clients have been effective. Caring is important for nursing because caring behavior shown by a nurse can make patients optimistic and speed up their healing process. Caring behavior also shows that nurses have a connection with the patient and makes the patient feel that he is not alone. By having a nurse using knowledge tailored to care for them, patients can gain a sense of comfort. Moreover, according to Watson, a caring relationship and caring environment can promote human dignity and integrity, empower patients self awareness and self knowledge which will affect healing positively (Watson, 2005). In the health care system, patients are vulnerable because their physical condition is less than optimal and they do not have the knowledge that health care professionals have regarding the treatment they receive. This creates an unequal power between the health care system and the patient. Therefore it is nurses obligation to be an advocate for their patients needs and speak out for the patient for the most ideal intervention, especially where there is a dispute among the health care team (Steefel,2008). Leadership is important to nursing because it is a quality that ensures and promotes the best nursing care to the general public. When a nurse finds an inappropriate situation in the health care system which could cause harm to the public, a nurse with leadership characteristics would step out and actively solve the problem in order to protect the public interest. A nurse with leadership qualities can also demonstrate and educate other new nurses about nursing integrity and professionalism. A nurse leader can work in the health care unit and use her knowledge to direct other health care members to solve conflicts within the health care system, ensuring that the public can enjoy better health care service (CNO,2002). The six symbols in our groups coat of arm are puzzle pieces, a torch, a sheep skin scroll, a heart with hands of different race , a book with key, and a balance. All the symbols are sitting on an aqua coloured shield. There is a pink shell with four pearls at the apex of the shield. In the middle of the shield is a hexagon combined with two triangles connecting all six symbols on the coat of arms. There are also two brown wooden ladders on each side of the shield. Puzzle pieces are a symbol of critical thinking. It is because a person has to think carefully to put all the puzzle pieces together. It is just like how nurses think critically to put all the pieces of patient information together and analyze them in order to provide appropriate care to the patient. The torch symbolizes leadership. The person who holds the torch takes initiative to walk in front of the crowd and uses the light to guide the followers. The scroll is a symbol of communication since in the ancient times, Kings communicated over long distances by writing messages on a scroll and sending it to his officials. A heart with hands of different races symbolizes caring, as nurses care for others including patients and their family members, regardless of their background and race. The book with key symbolizes knowledge. The key helps people open the doors of knowledge. The balance is a symbol of advocacy because nurses have to be an advocate for their clients and to help balance the power between vulnerable patients and health care professionals. The ladders symbolize Benners five stages of skill acquisition a nurse will undergo, from novice to expert. In conclusion, my understanding of nursing has changed by become more rounded since fall. Before I thought nursing simply means to take care of the problem affecting patients, but now I understand that nurses take care of the patients overall well being. Doing so properly requires all of the skills described in this essay.

Create a speech on ââ¬ÅLooking for Alibrandiââ¬Â Essay
ââ¬Å"Looking for Alibrandiâ⬠is a film which develops the notion of changing perspective through focusing on the central character Josies search for identity and belonging in the world and her relationships with other characters. Moreover, the use of music and camera shots is applied to certain scenes to emphasize Josies attitude and feelings. The use of voice over is applied throughout the film by the main character Josie Alibrandi as it constantly reveals personal ideas and impressions from Josies point of view. During her final year of High school, her life is turned upside down. However, as she matures from being a very rebellious and determined girl to a more responsible and experienced young woman, perspectives of her own identity, her culture and the people around her change drastically. In ââ¬Å"Looking for Alibrandiâ⬠changing perspectives is demonstrated through the concept of cultural background, Josie has to come to terms with her Italian heritage including Tomato Day or as she likes to call it National Wog Day, because her culture makes up who she is. Italian music is applied to this scene to represent there Italian culture and to allow the audience to gain some knowledge and understanding about their traditions and customs. Also, fast paced music is taken over towards the end of the scene to indicate the way she feels rushed and embarrassed about her culture. A key event in the film that changes Josies perspective is the meeting of her father, Michael Andretti. Initially, Josie is hostile to her father and unsympathetic to his explanations. However, as certain events unfold, Josie begins to admire him and sentimental piano music is plays to convey the positive attitude she had towards the idea of having a father figure. Michael Andretti also faces a similar change in perspective of his daughter and his own perspective on fatherhood. Furthermore, another change in perspective is identity. Primarily, Josieà believes due to her ethnic background, she was looked down upon. However, the experience of a close friends death causes her to realize the importance of family and that others have it much worse than her. In relation to John Bartons death, a close up of Josies face is captured to display her devastated yet numb expression along with harmonious tunes to mirror Josies grief. In conclusion, as demonstrated in ââ¬Å"Looking for Alibrandiâ⬠, changing perspectives is an ongoing process in life and is can be both positive and negative. Without this process in life, a person cannot adapt to new situations and present themselves in life.

The objective of this experiment was to synthesize aspirin from salicylic acid and acetic anhydride. The purity of aspirin was tested using the ferric chloride test and % yield was also calculated. When a person first enters the Army they are taught and instilled into our brain the meaning of respect within the military. It pretty much means to treat people with the proper respect as they should be treated. Also, it helps recognizing and acknowledging all our leaders who and what purpose they are in this U. S. Army to give them the proper courtesies of their position and/or Title. Respect is found in the same way as disrespect but for the sign of Respect is that the person shows you their upmost attention to every detail that is put out to the person. Obeying an order from a NCO or commissioned officers is highly respect in the military world the proper way to respect an NCO or commissioned officer is by standing at the proper position for an NCO it will be standing at parade rest for a commissioned officer the soldier or personnel addressing the officer will stand at attention if the soldier of personnel does not do the proper actions then there will be an on the spot correction unless given the order to either stand at ease or rest then you can stand at any position you want, but overall if you are ddress to do something by a NCO or commissioned officer then you need to do that order. Do the direct order now not later or put it off because it is disobeying a direct order from a N CO or commissioned officer and that will lead to consequences ranging from counseling to UCMJ punishment because of a disobeyed a direct order from an NCO or commissioned officer. If I see an NCO or officer appointed over myself not doing the right thing, some soldiers if not I will continue my behavior thinking is it correct. But now the ehavior has been passed on and leaders will have a harder time dealing with their soldiers. Some people say that you should give respect to everyone. Other people say that respect should be earned. I think that respect is a two way street. To get respect you have to give respect. Respect is neither a right nor a privilege; it is something that you earn over time through your actions, though in the army it is expected of all lower enlisted. Earned respect builds relationship between people. When another person earns your respect you work harder to have that same respect returned to you. I think that respect is taught by example, as most good thin gs are. Discipline also known as Military Bearing is the glue that holds a combat team together. Without it there is no unit cohesion, no espirit de corps, and no coordination. However, discipline is a complex product of training, leadership, and respect. Discipline is of the utmost importance in order to ensure the efficiency of the military organization as a whole as well that of the individual units efficiency helps to ensure that goals are met and that the highest level of preparedness is maintained at all times. The level f discipline directly affects a soldiers conduct so the two concepts are directly related and of equal importance. Army Regulation 600ââ¬â20 Army Command Policy, Section Four, in particular, outlines the commanders responsibility to maintain proper military discipline and conduct. Each subsection addresses a different aspect, or issue, affecting Soldiers behavior. Section 4 -1, for example, addresses military discipline, its importance, and command respons ibilities for maintaining it. A well disciplined soldier carries himself with pride, Gives respect to others that out rank him and to those below him. Give the greeting of the day to the non-commissioned officers he passes and salutes the officer he passes as well. In our army a lack of discipline in a soldier may not only cost him is life and the life of his comrades, but cause a military undertaking to fail and his team to be defeated. On the other hand a team of a few well-disciplined solders is worth many times a much larger number of undisciplined individuals who are nothing more than an armed mob. History repeatedly shows that without discipline, no body of troops can hold its own against a well- isciplined and well-directed enemy. In you work in the Army we may wonder why the officers and noncommissioned officers insist on perfection in what appears to be minor details. Why do our vehicles have to be PMCS; why do we have to keep everything in line; why must your bed be mad e in a certain way; why must your uniform and equipment be in a prescribed order at all times; why must all officers be saluted with snap and precision? These things are a part of your disciplinary training. Their purpose is to teach you bedience, loyalty, team play, personal pride, pride in your organization, respect for the rights of others, and the will to win. How can anyone, even myself imagine how the army would turn out without all of the Army values it is pretty much obvious that without respect and military bearing the US. Army or even the military as a whole would be in chaos without any type of guidelines on obeying orders. It is even stated when you swear in ââ¬Å"that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. â⬠Donââ¬â¢t waste time!
